Bagasse Plates: For Guilt-Free Meals and Empty Landfills

Ever wondered if disposables could be planet-safe? With our bagasse plate collection, you can easily plan any kind of meal without having to make a bad ecological impact. Our range of plant-based and compostable plates is made from sugarcane bagasse and is here with a certified back-to-nature promise.

Being tree-free and plastic-free, these disposable plates are also pretty easy to dispose of and super sturdy enough to hold all kinds of messy, runny meals without making a mess. So, with that in mind, here's what you need to know about our bagasse plate collection and why you need to choose bagasse over single-use plastics.

Made safe for the Planet & Your Meals

Our entire range of bagasse plates is made from upcycled sugarcane bagasse. Bagasse is a leftover that is left behind once the juice is extracted from sugarcane stalks. This waste is usually dumped into landfills and burnt to get rid of. However, we, at EcoSoul, believe in a circular economy. That being said, we upcycle this agro-waste and convert it into everyday essentials like tableware to help recycle plant waste and cut your reliance on single-use plastics.

In short, these plates have nothing but plants. They are also certified compostable. Unlike other plastic or paper plates, which take a lot of time to decompose and break down, these picnic plates are certified to break down into tiny pieces after a couple of weeks post-disposal. And, the better part is that they break down into compost. Also called humus, this compost is ultra-rich in nutrients and is known to increase the soil's nutrient content by accelerating its water retention levels. The compost formed from bagasse plates can be mixed with your backyard soil to offer important nutrients to the soil.

However, the thing about single-use plastic plates is that they never really go away. So, while they might break down into tiny pieces in a couple of decades (or years), they still manage to leave a long trail of microplastics behind. These tiny bits of microplastics get mixed in with the soil and are ingested by animals or washed into the ocean. Either way, they end up entering our food chain, and we consume our own plastic trash. The point is plastic never really goes away. And, besides being a bad choice for the planet, it's pretty hazardous for our health too.

How Are Bagasse Plates Made?

Bagasse is a by-product of sugarcane that is left behind once the sugarcane juice is extracted. Here's a small breakdown of how bagasse plates are made at EcoSoul:

Waste Collection

Β The process usually starts with collecting bagasse fibers. So, instead of sending them to the landfills, we take this waste to our machinery and make some super sturdy plates out of it. These plates are kind to the planet but strong enough to handle all your meals.

Cleaning

The next step is to give this agro-waste a good, warm scrub. To eliminate any kind of unwanted toxins, germs or pesticides, we thoroughly wash bagasse and let it air dry to ensure all the moisture is eradicated. The next step is where our first quality check comes in. Before sending it in the molds, we start by separating the fibrous and non-fibrous parts of the bagasse using a detector. This allows us to use only good quality bagasse to make these disposable plates.

Pulping

Once all the extracted and "good" bagasse is dried out and cleared, we shred all the fibers together, leaving behind a pulpy mess that is just rightly blended and all ready for the next step.

Molding

The last step is filling the mold with the pulp. Using high-pressure heat presses, we remove even the slightest ounce of moisture, leaving behind dry, perfect pulp. Once the pulp has taken the shape of a mold, we send it to a special drying zone when it dries and solidifies.

Final Touches

Before they are packed and shipped to you, we inspect each piece closely to ensure there are no anomalies. We also trim and provide the final touches to the plates.
